Highway Code updated to make motorways safer

The Freeway Code has been up to date to supply clearer advice for motorists working with motorways and to boost basic highway security.

Rules have been up to date to emphasise that motorists will need to get adequate sleep prior to embarking on a very long journey, though motorists are reminded that unexpected emergency refuge spots and hard shoulders are not correct places to quit for a rest crack or any other non-unexpected emergency cause.

Motorists have also been reminded that they must not travel in lanes where a red X image is exhibited on the overhead gantry – a rule that is now enforced by cameras. If a motorway exit can only be accessed by crossing by means of a lane with a red X higher than it, then motorists must think about that exit shut and not try out to switch off.

New pictures have also been added to the Freeway Code to aid motorists have an understanding of what the variable velocity restrict signs revealed on wise motorways appear like.

In addition to this, even more information has been specified on tailgating, together with what it is and why it is dangerous. Motorists are reminded that the police will enforce dangerous or careless driving offences if a person is caught tailgating.

The AA welcomed the up to date Freeway Code, with the organisation’s president Edmund King indicating it “gives fantastic guidance on how to hold motorists and some others safe on our roads”.
