Lancia 037 prototype number one up for auction

A legend in rallying, the Lancia 037 marked the finish of an period. It was concurrently the initially automobile to earn the legendary Group B constructors’ championship, but also the final non-AWD automobile to earn an over-all WRC title. And, it did so by defeating the juggernaut of Audi’s VW-backed, all-wheel-travel Quattro, a feat handful of considered achievable. Now, the originator of that historic victory, the initially Lancia 037 prototype, is up for auction.

Chassis 037-001 might not appear like the 200 or so homologated 037 Stradales, but beneath the cobbled-together styling, awkward panel gaps, and package automobile-like command panel, it has the essentials that designed its successors world champions. Electrical power arrives by means of a mid-mounted, supercharged sixteen-valve 2.-liter 4 driving the real wheels as a result of a 5-speed transmission. Centered (really) loosely on a Lancia Montecarlo (AKA Scorpion in the U.S.), the the front and rear sub-sections are tube-framed, and the motor rotated ninety degrees for a longitudinal orientation.

This individual automobile was designed by race automobile constructor Dallara, but you can detect an Abarth badge on the rear deck. At the time, the Fiat tuning division was was in demand of Lancia’s rally method, so it bought some branding showcased on the prototype that didn’t make the last slash. Other stylistic variances on this prototype that didn’t make it to the race automobile contain its squared-off wheel arches, staggered headlight placement, and spherical taillights.

The prototype was at first pink but eventually Lancia painted it in the white and blue Martini livery of the race cars and trucks, working with it on reconnaissance runs. The latest proprietor, Sergio Limone, restored it back again to its initial shade and spec.

The 1983 WRC fight involving the 037 and the Audi Quattro is the things of legend. Lancia stretched the rulebook to its limit to grab the earn, concentrating its endeavours on the rounds it understood it could succeed in, flooding them with 037s to box Audi out of the podium (and factors), while absolutely skipping rounds the place it understood its RWD would be at a drawback. Ironically, it was a different German, Walter Rohrl, alongside with Finland’s Markku Alén (Finland was a person of the skipped rounds) who sent Lancia their WRC title.

In 2019 a Lancia 037 highway automobile sold for about $867,000 at auction. Although not as driveable, this prototype is arguably extra substantial, historically talking. We are going to know its accurate price when it crosses the block at an RM Sotheby’s auction in Milan on June fifteen.
