Mahindra to expand engine capacity in Ford plant, Auto News, ET Auto

NEW DELHI: Mahindra & Mahindra will leverage Ford India’s manufacturing device in Chennai to broaden engine ability for its automobiles, strengthening its alliance more with the American carmaker, M&M running director Pawan Goenka said on Thursday.

“So, the next enlargement will transpire in the Ford plant and by doing so we will be preserving about Rs 400 crore,” he instructed ET.

M&M and Ford are also doing the job on utilising every single other’s auto architectures to spawn out various sports utility automobiles in the future. The duo is building a compact SUV codename W601, based mostly on a Mahindra system. A B-phase SUV on the Ford system is also beneath discussion, Goenka said.

Mahindra programs to roll out three all-new utility automobiles in the next eighteen months. Although the C-SUV is slated for launch in the coming fiscal calendar year, it will be adopted by Z101, a new-gen Scorpio in calendar 2021. Initially of the block will be an all-new Thar that will strike the streets within just three months.

Goenka said the businesses will see cumulative cost savings of Rs 1,400 crore owing from joint enhancement of products and solutions and utilisation of Ford’s engine ability in Chennai. “With the Ford partnership, we will be having the benefit of Ford technologies and also the benefit of lessening enhancement price,” he said.

“And, we consider, on the C-SUV…we will be preserving about Rs 1,000 crore concerning the two (M&M and Ford) of us.”

Mahindra has misplaced its dominance in the country’s intensely competitive utility auto phase to the country’s leading carmaker Maruti Suzuki. Mahindra bought 146,164 utility automobiles in the nine months until December 2019, while Maruti Suzuki bought 184,330 units in the category.
