SOUL SURVIVOR. – Rants – Autoextremist.com ~ the bare-knuckled, unvarnished, high-electron truth…

Detroit. That I have a deep love of every thing Pontiac is well acknowledged. I grew up immersed in this company – correct in the thick of GM’s heyday – and Pontiac performed a critical job in each my formative many years and my early advertising occupation. That’s why when GM took the individual bankruptcy pill in 2008, I was crushingly disappointed to learn that the Pontiac Division was a person of the property to be jettisoned. (And Hummer, far too, but fortuitously that nameplate has now returned.)
It is tough to believe that now, but Pontiac was just another GM division again in the mid-50s. It experienced a lineup of stodgy autos, and there was practically nothing to publish home about. The division existed underneath the GM company umbrella, but it was decidedly lacking in just about everything when in comparison to GM’s other divisions: Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and Oldsmobile. But that would all adjust when Bunkie Knudsen was appointed a GM vice president and the division’s common supervisor in July of 1958. Knudsen was supplied the assignment to inject some life into the division and enhance sales, and he was provided carte blanche to do it.
As a reminder, if you have been a GM vice president and divisional standard manager back again in the day you have been akin to a potentate jogging a tiny country. GM’s divisional standard supervisors had huge electrical power with duty for engineering, producing, income and promoting. Wondering about that in comparison with how matters operate today, it does not appear to be true, for the reason that it was so substantially distinct from modern automobile company it is like looking through from a fairytale e book. But make no error, it was extremely real, and GM’s divisional common administrators ended up like giants roaming the earth, swashbuckling their way through the day-to-day of the organization even though making essential, pivotal choices on the fly. Remember, this was a enterprise that debuted new automobiles just about every slide with new sheet steel and new attributes to go with them. Once again, in comparison with how factors are finished today, it is just jaw-dropping to contemplate how the business churned back again then. Indeed, as I’ve stated quite a few, quite a few periods ahead of, it was a distinctive time and a distinct era, but GM’s heyday was actually outstanding in that the company soared since of it, even with the bean counters trying to rein factors in each individual move of the way.
The only arena wherever GM’s divisional normal managers had to consider a move back again was when dealing with GM Styling, which was run with an iron fist by style legend Bill Mitchell, who inherited the mantle from Harley Earl. The clashes amongst Mitchell and GM’s divisional general supervisors had been legendary, and I will conserve people tales for yet another column. But suffice to say, Mitchell got what he required for the most aspect, even if he had to enjoy the divisional basic managers off against every other to do so.
But again to Bunkie and Pontiac. His very first hires have been two young and gifted engineers – Pete Estes from Oldsmobile and John Z. DeLorean from Packard. The charge to DeLorean was extremely certain: get Pontiac into the effectiveness business appropriate now. And considering that Bunkie was a large racing enthusiast, every thing was on the table, from NASCAR to drag racing.
And all of a unexpected, very hot Pontiacs stuffed with big V8s commenced to show up all over the place, from Daytona to Pomona. And even in our driveway. Since Bunkie and his wife were social good friends with my dad and mom, Bunkie began sending the best Pontiacs to our household precisely for my mother to generate. Starting in the summer time of 1959, we experienced a collection of Bonneville and Catalina convertibles that had been always vivid red with a white major and a vibrant pink inside. And they were generally equipped with the best Pontiac engine at the time, which at to start with have been 389 cu. in. V8s with 3×2-barrell carbs, and inevitably 421 cu.in. V8s. Pointless to say, my mother beloved her incredibly hot Pontiacs. (And my brother and I did, also, primarily since he had just gotten his license and we would “exercise” mom’s autos at every prospect.)
The transformation of the Pontiac Division is a superb section of GM lore. Pontiacs went from currently being functional transportation gadgets to some of the hottest autos in the market. Providing functionality engineering and styling that just weren’t out there anyplace else, Pontiac rode a wave of acceptance that took the company – and GM – by storm.
I say GM because, try to remember that component about GM’s divisional vice presidents currently being akin to potentates of their individual nations? Nicely, that was true, right until Pontiac – underneath Bunkie Knudsen’s tutelage – commenced to upset the pecking order inside of the organization. Prior to Pontiac turned a “problem” for the other general supervisors, the GM divisional hierarchy was obvious: Cadillac was up and off to the aspect luxuriating in its very own rarified world. Buick was next in conditions of status, with the super-well-known Chevrolet sucking up all of the air in the area mainly because of its unbelievable profits quantities, followed by Oldsmobile, which just chugged alongside, and then the moribund Pontiac.
At least which is the way it made use of to be before Bunkie and his “pirates” got rolling. All of a unexpected, factors had adjusted. Chevrolet, which really substantially had significant-general performance advertising opportunities cornered within just GM, was staying seriously pushed by Pontiac on all fronts. Chevrolet operatives grew to become far more incensed with each individual Pontiac foray into their territory, and the intramural battles involving the two divisions spilled in excess of all the way to GM’s vaunted 14th floor, with whining Chevrolet executives complaining to top rated GM execs that Pontiac was deliberately encroaching on Chevy’s territory. As you can imagine, this didn’t sit nicely with Knudsen and DeLorean & Co. The increasing product sales quantities, nevertheless, have been in Pontiac’s favor so GM’s leading execs really a lot enable Pontiac go, which additional even far more fuel to Chevy’s fireplace.
Then, in 1963, when GM issued its formal ban towards the participation in racing as company coverage (a monumentally chicken-shit choice, by the way), the divisional normal managers had to comply. (This is when Zora Arkus-Duntov, somewhat than destroying the Corvette Grand Athletics, delivered them to reliable racer close friends of the corporation, for generally cost-free. And the company’s deeply embedded marriage with Jim Hall’s Chaparral autos went totally underground.)
The tiny-recognised collateral problems from that anti-racing ban was a GM inside edict that prohibited certain sized V8 from becoming place in “smaller” automobiles, which is a joke contemplating those lesser autos have been substantial by today’s expectations. The Chevrolet operatives dutifully complied with the edict, even though Pontiac operatives, led by DeLorean and Invoice Collins – the gifted engineer who warrants most of the credit rating for this upcoming piece of automotive historical past – determined to go in one more route. Prior to the racing ban, Collins had been fast paced stuffing Pontiac’s 389-cu.in. V8s into “intermediate” Le Mans bodies, and the end result was, pointless to say, magical. But when the edict took outcome, Pontiac was particularly ordered not to stuff a V8 into a Le Mans to make it into a new Pontiac design.
Then, a little bit of genius. Pontiac operatives made the decision to get all over the ban by making the “GTO” a new option offer on the 1964 Pontiac Le Mans. And the rest, as they say, is automotive history, as the initial “muscle” car or truck was born. Chevrolet operatives were being apoplectic, but by the time GM corporate received wind of what was taking place, the GTO solution experienced grow to be a person of the most sought-just after significant-general performance alternative offers in the industry. And by 1966 it turned its have individual product.
Pontiac was purple-incredibly hot, with its exclusive model of significant-functionality engineering and some of GM Styling’s best layouts coming in wave just after wave. From there, Pontiac would pile achievements on achievements, reaching, at 1 point, a few million in yearly income. The rebels out in Pontiac, Michigan, had gained.
And nearly the ideal portion? Pontiac was supported by sensational marketing, obviously some of the greatest and most memorable advertising in the vehicle organization at the time. That pissed off Chevrolet’s advert company – Campbell-Ewald – on a normal basis, which produced it even improved.
As for the intramural battle between Chevrolet and Pontiac, it continued. Pontiac came out with the Grand Prix in 1962, and the extensive-nosed ’69 version pushed by DeLorean was another enormous strike. Chevrolet arrived out with the Camaro in 1967, but the Pontiac Firebird to some, was improved hunting. The ’70 Camaro, which was dramatic in its possess suitable, was undercut by the wonderful ‘70 Pontiac Firebird Trans-Am and Firebird Formula. As late as 1984, when Pontiac arrived out with the mid-engine Fiero, the battle continued. Chevrolet insisted that it could not encroach on Corvette territory, so the Fiero was limited to a 4-cylinder at intro and bought a V6 appropriate in advance of it was dropped. The 2nd-era Fiero, which I experienced the pleasure of seeing, experienced “Corvette-killer” created all more than it, but there was simply just no way Chevrolet operatives have been likely to make it possible for it to see the mild of day, so they lobbied against it seriously, and it by no means did.
The Pontiac tale is well worth telling. And it’s not just because of the incredible cars and nameplates like Bonneville, Catalina, Fiero, Firebird, Grand Prix, GTO and Le Mans. It’s due to the fact a bunch of maverick Correct Believers thumbed their noses at the corporate inertia that threatened to overrun GM at the time and dared to go up against an intramural corporate rival to deliver some of the greatest and most memorable devices to appear out of Detroit.
I had the pleasure of doing the job on Pontiac promotion at D’Arcy MacManus & Masius from 1980-1985, and I will never ever ignore it. Even although the business enterprise was fast altering and Pontiac was commencing to eliminate its identity inside the GM company monolith, the spirit of the former advert greats that arrived ahead of me and my advertisement colleagues was as powerful, vivid and visceral as it could be. And we worked to make them very pleased each damn day.
Is this a plea for GM to resurrect Pontiac? That is a really hard “no.” Pontiac existed in a fleeting instant in time and remaining its indelible mark on automotive history – never to be repeated, but under no circumstances to be overlooked.
And that’s the Substantial-Octane Real truth for this 7 days.
(Pontiac)
