DOE unveils US$139m in technology funding | Automotive Industry News

US Secretary of Energy, Dan Brouillette has introduced US$139m in Federal funding for 55 initiatives across the state, which will assist new and innovative car or truck systems.

Six of these initiatives will be led by teams in Michigan.

“Technological innovation is key to revitalising America’s producing competitiveness, specifically in the transportation sector,” said Secretary Brouillette. “I’m fired up to announce 6 of the 55 whole initiatives will be led by teams listed here in Michigan, a Point out that has been the backbone of the American vehicle market for many years.

“The Trump Administration is dedicated to investing in systems that expand accessibility to inexpensive mobility and present individuals with a broad array of transportation solutions to satisfy their requirements.”

Funded via the US Division of Energy’s (DOE’s) Business of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE), initiatives will conduct exploration in innovative batteries, electrification, and producing in assist of DOE’s Energy Storage Grand Obstacle.

Announced by Secretary Brouillette in January, 2020, the Energy Storage Grand Challenge is a strategy to make and sustain US work in power storage know-how, utilisation and exports.

Amongst the initiatives introduced, EERE’s Vehicle Technologies Business (VTO) and EERE’s Advanced Producing Business (AMO) are collaborating on two initiatives totalling US$15m aimed at lightweight and substantial-effectiveness fibre-bolstered polymer composites for car or truck programs.

To start with, a Ford-led crew, in collaboration with DOE’s Oak Ridge Countrywide Laboratory and other companions, will create multi-functional composite constructions with electronics integration for cross vehicle beam programs.

Second, a Basic Motors-led crew is acquiring fibre-bolstered composites for substantial quantity producing of structural battery enclosures. Michigan Point out University’s Scale Up Investigation Facility is partnering with both of those teams.

The facility was founded with DOE funding through the Institute for State-of-the-art Composites Producing Innovation.

Selected initiatives in this funding chance will be managed by VTO.

VTO exploration pathways focus on gasoline diversification, car or truck efficiency, power storage, lightweight materials and new mobility systems, to improve the total power efficiency and affordability of the transportation program.
